Used – Volkswagen Polo Vivo 2017
I bought mine second-hand with about 60,000km on the clock, and it's now sitting just under 140,000km with nothing major ever going wrong. It's not exciting to drive and the interior definitely shows its age against newer hatchbacks, but as a daily runabout for city driving and the odd road trip, it's been completely dependable. Servicing has been cheap and straightforward every time, and I've never struggled to find a mechanic who knows the car well. If you want something exciting, look elsewhere but if you just want a car that starts every morning and doesn't cost a fortune to keep running, it's hard to fault.
What they liked
Cheap to run and insure, genuinely easy to park in tight Cape Town streets, and parts are everywhere since so many are on the road. Never once left me stranded.
What they'd change
It feels its age inside, the interior is quite basic compared to newer small cars, and there's no cruise control on my trim, which I really miss on long N1 drives.
